Making Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Kitchen Renovations - How to Do a DIY Kitchen Cabinet Doors Renovation

There are a lot of things in the kitchen that needs your attention if you are doing a kitchen renovation; and even more so when you are doing a DIY renovation. One such thing is the kitchen cabinets. You may choose to replace the whole kitchen cabinets or just do some minor changes or improvements on it like the color or door design, depending on the extent of changes you wanted to achieve. If you are thinking of doing the cabinet doors yourself, here are 6 things you can do to get the project done.

The first thing you should do is to find the wood that you want of your kitchen cabinet. There are lots of choices to choose from: if you re on a limited budget poplar or cedar are you inexpensive choices. If money is not a problem then you can choose pecan, cherry or walnut. But since you are doing a DIY renovation you probably have a limit to your budget so you should consider carefully. One wood choice for your cabinet that is on the average scale for its cost is the oak, so that could be a good selection. Decide if you want to make a cabinet door with either the same or different material as your existing cabinet.

Second step is to choose what design you wanted for you cabinet doors. You can select from among many design, from the plainest square or rectangular door, to the elaborately designed ones. You can improve kitchen aesthetics if you make doors that match with the design of the kitchen.

Next is to find a good finish for the kitchen cabinet doors. That is if you want to paint the door or you could decide to retain the original wood color of your kitchen cabinet and just apply some coatings of varnish to enhance the color. If the latter is the case, then you have to find a varnish color that is as close as the kitchen cabinet doors color. If you wanted to play with paint, you have to choose a nice color that matches with the color of the room. For instance, if your wall color is a coastal shade of blue, you might want to use turquoise or something that's a shade lighter than your wall color if you wanted to achieve a coastal feeling to your kitchen. Have fun while you choose your colorsyou are sure to find the perfect color scheme.

If you already have a general idea on how your door will look, the next task is to find the perfect door hardware. Try to pick something that would look great and is made of good material. Or you could just choose to cut so pull-grooves at the opening side of the doors and then polish them with plane and sand.
Start your project by measuring the size of your cabinet and obtain the door size that would fit to your cabinet. You might want to check the measurement twice so that you can avoid making a lot of mistakes. It would be a waste of wood and effort if you commit lost of mistakes in completing this project, so cautiousness is a must. Plane and sand the doors to a smooth finish.

Finally, start the installation. Attach the hinges on the cabinets first. The hinges must be at least an inch above and below the cabinets top and bottom edges. Then install the doors. Make sure that the alignment is right when starting with the installation of the kitchen cabinets to avoid having to take them down and doing the process all over again.

If you do these steps, then your DIY project of doing your own kitchen renovations is one step closer to being complete.
